I'm an 87-year-old woman with dementia, and I do not like living at River Oaks. They drag me out of bed at 6am from a sound sleep, even though I desperately need to rest. My motor skills and continence started declining after only ten days at this facility, and after 30 days I was found unresponsive, unable to speak or sit up. The staff did nothing about this, but my daughter was able to hydrate me and keep me out of the hospital that time. We met with Regional-Level directors about the poor care I was getting, but a month later, I was again dehydrated, potassium-depleted, sleep-deprived and unresponsive. I spent my longest stay in the hospital yet, and then have to go to rehab for a couple of weeks because my health has been so compromised. All of this could have been avoided if I were only under a beneficial wellness plan of rest and a balanced diet. Do not trust River Oaks with your well-being. They do not care.

After ten days in River Oaks, we are ready to move our mother elsewhere because what we agreed to has become null and void and it feels like a "bait and switch" maneuver. Mom was originally assessed as "Level One" care plan (twice--once informally and then more formally by the nursing assistant), but after just one morning where she was struggling and needed additional help getting dressed, she was immediately reassessed and placed at almost a Level 3. That's quite a difference! It's also hundreds of dollars more every month to pay. Strike two is that we were told we could have Internet service for $35 per month; however, not a single device would connect to their Internet. More egregious is that it took ten days for River Oaks to finally be honest and say we would have to contact Spectrum ourselves to get Internet service. Strike three is that it also took ten days for them to finally provide the emergency alert pendant that my mother should have received upon entering the residence. Additional strikes are from their leaving soiled (urine-soaked) items in laundry basket or on the bed instead of laundering them, having unhealthy, sugary snacks and carbohydrate-heavy meals daily, and lack of attention to my mother's dietary needs which likely led to her needing the additional help I mentioned first in this review. Her ankles were swollen and her blood pressure was elevated, telling us she will not do well living in these circumstances. It's very disappointing that we were promised so much and so little was actually delivered, and I haven't even mentioned that her apartment was dirty with a huge spider living in her closet when we moved in.

APS was contacted. Understaffed. Ratio of caregiver to residents to is too low, staffed too thin. Thus, elderly abuse seen and heard. Would never place my loved one in this facility. Generational gap (different era for elderly), mostly white residents is misunderstood by mostly african american staff who hang around the medication cart and gossip.

Horrible, unprofessional, and dishonest I’m taking my mother out of here after two weeks and filing a Health and Human Services complaint because the facility has allowed her to sleep in urine soaked sheets. My mother reports getting her 8am dose of meds at 10:30 most mornings. “Light housekeeping” does not include throwing away the styrofoam containers from the meal before. The entire room smells of urine. The director of nursing has been directly dishonest with me on at least one occasion. The Executive Director takes every opportunity to be rude to me. You get one hour a day to visit, but their process takes 10 minutes so you end up with 50 minutes to visit your loved one. But my favorite - the “rules” and agreements change with the winds. I was told yes to a request, set it all up, and when I got there they had changed their minds. They kicked my mom’s cat out with less than 24 hours notice. Their favorite excuse - the have to follow “the rules” for everyone - if only I knew which rules to follow... I’d settle for professionalism, respect and honesty.
