We enjoyed this delightful train ride from Palestine Texas to Rusk texas. The train went about 25-30 miles an hour, a good speed to enjoy the delightful scenery. most of the trip was going through woods and pine forests. But there were a few lakes farm houses and other smaller towns also. You could get up and go from car to car, and also on the last car you were basically viewing the tracks as we went along. A great place for photos. It was a delightful day. We were served lunch when we got to Rusk, and we had over an hour to enjoy that and the surroundings. Even though it was quite warm the train cars were air conditioned and the ride was very comfortable. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to have an interesting getaway.

Fantastic and must do attaction/destination. Schedule it in advance! Not great for small kids as it is kind of boring to the smaller ones. Order your lunch in advance! We absolutely enjoyed an old time train ride 1.5 hours out, 1 hour for lunch and 1.5 back. It did have a couple of mechanical issues that caused delays, but, we still enjoyed it!

I had a very good time. My experience was greater than I initially thought it would be. I sat in the open air car. It gives you a better experience hearing the steam engine do its thing. And even though it was 90° there was sufficient air coming into the car to keep you cool. I'm sure I will be back.

Joyce was an amazing tour guide. She made our train ride a fun, joyful and educational experience. I plan on telling all of my friends in Dallas about the amazing time I had with my family and friends. I definitely plan on coming back. The train ride was so much fun. Great lunch options.

I think it runs all year they also have the polar express for the holidays coming up
It's only open on days that they are running in the Palestine depo and you will need to go to the website to see the schedule. It changes sometimes. The rusk depo Park is open everyday because of the RV park they have over there.
Mostly diesel, but occassionally steam. Steam takes an incredible amount of water to run the train, 10s of thousands of gallons, so it is not often used.
They have 5 trips a day, at least they did around Christmas when we were there. Best to check their website for specific time and date.
You can visit our Facebook Page and message us through the page. We are Texas State Railroad "Official" on the Facebook platform. Thank you for visiting us and we hope you had a great time!
Not when we went.
I was in the Presidential car and I didn't even smell any diesel.
No it isn't. However, we loved it. Well organized. We were in the dome car. It was great and we met some really nice people.
I was not in an outside car, as they call them. I was inside so the outside didn't affect me. So if you are worried about the outside you can get an inside car.
Hi my family and I where just there. From what I can remember about the spacing, a 24" wide scooter does seem wide especially when you have to travel between rail cars. If you could try a walking cain or crutches or even a 2 wheel knee scooter instead of a 4 wheel would be a better option.
For what I see I guess it is, you can check the website to make sure.
Yes
Your best bet is to call and ask the reason no schedule for the first week of November is they are setting up for their Polar Express ride.

The Wine in the Pines was 4 hours because we rode from Palastine to Rusk, got off the train and had dinner then got back on and went back to Palastine.
Call the station or check the website. You'll find the people there more than helpful and ready to answer all of your questions.
