Cold windy day at Bear Lake outside Cuchara, CO. Elevation is around 10,400 and the road to Blue and Bear lake is well maintained. We caught a couple of fish and released them. Camp sites are primitive with vault toilets. It was a great day to visit the area after leaving Santa Fe Trails Ranch, Trinidad, CO this morning.

So beautiful!! My dogs and I had so much fun. The water is so clear you can see the fish going after your line.

Very good & easy campground. Pretty, well maintained and most trails nearby are super short and simple. Only drawback is it can get a tad crowded. Well worth an easy campout.

Love love love the southern areas of Colorado. Especially Spanish Peak country. Such a beautiful place. Lake is a quick 5 minute walk from the campground. Lots of trout in the lake. Water is COLD π Clean restrooms and nice campground. Host was helpful but ran out of firewood fast. I'd suggest bringing your own. Would definitely be visiting again. Being cold camping gear!

It is if the gate is open, but strictly at your own risk and no reservations (first come first serve). You still HAVE to pay the park fees for use. Some severe storms will prohibit traveling back and forth to the site. E.G.: severe winter storms.
"Uh, hehe, if you want to not catch anything." - wife of fly-fisher man My answer: there's always quite a few people fishing, {you can see fish splashing!} .. I heard that someone caught fish at Blue Lake..
The official check out time is noon but a lot of people leave early. I saw people out by 7 and 8 am. The unassigned sites were available as the previous people were leaving. It is a high use campground but it is quiet, beautiful and the hosts are super. I hope this helps!
No sir. Max 35'.
keep but you do need a license
The campground is still closed but i sae two fifth wheels up there
Bear lake is fairly small . You can cast your fishing pole to at least the middle of the lake from almost any side of the lake. I have seen a couple of people kayak there but ff there are any fisherman you would def be dodging lures being launched your way. Lol. But north lake is about 30 min drive south from bear lake and it's a nice lake to kayak in . I kayak there all the time.
I believe it's around $24
As soon as the snow stops and it is safe. Sorry the best I can do. I know they will open them ASAP
Yes just Be careful and keep it in a fire ring/extinguish it Fully when you are done!
According to the USFS site, the San Carlos Ranger District is open, but under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions.
Yes..but most likely closed or burned due to the Spring fireπ’
Area will open on 10 May so late May should be alright. This is a very popular area, but half of the sites are reservable. No electricity BTW.
