The water in the reservoir comes from many streams, The Mulhockaway Creek, Spruce Run, Willoughby Brook, and Black Brook are the main streams that used to converge here before the reservoir was built. The water is released into the South Branch of the Raritan River.

They are called Shelters because there is no electricity or running water inside but they are wooden cabin-like structures with two sets of bunk beds (4 beds) with room on the floor for two sleeping bags (6 people maximum); an indoor and an outdoor picnic table (bring pot holders so that you do not burn the table with hot pots and pans); an indoor woodstove and an outdoor fire ring with a grill top. Hi Ahsan, Aside from following all rules/regulations regarding fish you can keep (size, limit, etc) from NJ Fish and Wildlife, we are recommending NOT eating fish caught at Spruce Run Recreation Area right now due to the ongoing harmful algae bloom we've been experiencing. Do not drink or have contact with the water including, but not limited to, swimming, wading and water sports. Fish caught in this waterbody should not be eaten. Pets should not drink the water.
