I've been to the blackhills several times, first time honey moon with my wife and when I saw Sylvan lake, I knew we had to come back and to camp and hike. This campground is truly well run. The host Cheryl and Dave was very friendly and helpful. We stayed at tent size number 28. Was very glad we can park our car off road. Shower and bathrooms very clean and well maintained. Maybe they can fix the shower leak and add another bench inside the shower, that would have been tremendous. Definitely will come back again!

I can’t speak for the lower sites but we ended up getting a camp site with the most amazing views just had to pack in gear a little bit and couldn’t drive all the way up to it but the views were well worth it.

I loved staying at this campground. We planned on staying for two nights but stretched it to three because of the amenities and location. Nice bathrooms and showers. Good quality water. I camped at one of the spots up the hill with incredible views.

Woah! What an amazing location. The walk-in tents spots are truly magical, we didn’t have one this trip, but walked up by them nightly to stargaze. All modern conveniences are close by at Sylvan lake, even washer/dryer. Very friendly host and very well maintained amenities. Spots are close together, but didn’t have any noise issues.

You need to make a reservation online
If you are in a tent only site, you may have to haul some, but it isn't far. If you have an RV accessible site you will be able to drive right up to it. The campground has both.
There is usually a cement pad with room to park right by your site. Otherwise there is a parking lot close by
Water is just as you pull in. Dump station is a bit of a drive. You can find it on the park map.
Maybe, but I would not go without reservation.
Get a reservation, when I looked in the spring anything, within 60 days, for all campsites at Custer were booked.
Unfortunately, there is not a playground near Sylvan Lake Campground. There are playgrounds near the Game Lodge, Legion Lake, and Stockade North Campgrounds.
Yeah if you are a campsite with a fire pit. You just need to check for conditions
Right in the middle of the campground.
Yes there is a small .. nice .. shower house. Elec and water hookups only for camping. No sewer or dump station at this location.
Not in busy summer season
Reservations are always required to camp within Custer State Park. Same day reservations are available at Center Lake Campground.
The campground at Sylvan Lake is very small, hilly, and narrow. Depending on the site it can be incredibly difficult to maneuver a unit and we generally recommend against anything over 24'.
Most sites do have electric. We do not have water hookups at the individual sites; however, there are spigots within the campground where you can fill your water tanks.
Just electric sites.
