We initially came to Cortney for an evaluation for suspected Childhood Apraxia of Speech. It is a rare motor speech disorder and after doing a lot of research on my own, I knew we needed to find someone who specializes in motor planning speech therapy. She immediately recognized that my son presents with CAS and has been providing therapy for him twice per week for the last two months and I already recognize progress with varying sounds, more syllables, and more words per sentence. I fully trust her expertise and greatly appreciate how responsive and helpful she’s been. Thank you so much, Cortney for helping my son find his voice!

My daughter has been taking speech therapy sessions with Sol Speech & language for about 2 months now. The confidence that my daughter has gained from being able to properly say her name to the kids at the park is priceless! We have had the pleasure of working with Brandi and she is flat out great! Brandi has made this adventure for my family fun. I love that she can see the needs of my child and addresses them is such a perfect way! I highly recommend Sol Speech & Language! I also highly recommend working with Brandi!

Our son has been working with Nicole for a couple months now, and we could not be more pleased! We’ve worked with many STs in the past and Nicole has consistently provided us with prompt and valuable feedback, which hasn’t always been our experience. She handles all of our questions and concerns with professionalism, and even supplies supporting research and resources for reference. Our son’s speech has exploded in the past few weeks, and though it’s been a team effort, Nicole has been an integral part of that team.

Does speech therapy cure stuttering?

No. Speech therapy can help you treat your stutter, and in many cases can help you communicate more clearly. But there are no “cures” for stuttering.

Is stuttering common?

Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021
Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021

It’s estimated that about 1% of the world’s population stutters. That might not sound like a lot, but that’s 70 million people!

Is stuttering caused by trauma?

Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021
Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021

In some cases yes, but this is very rare. Stutter related to trauma is called psychogenic stuttering, and is almost entirely limited to adults. The vast majority of people who stutter do not have any history of trauma or emotional issues, other than the social anxiety caused by their stuttering.

What is a stutter?

Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021
Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021

A stutter is a speech disorder that can affect the way your speech flows. Your speech may be repetitive, prolonged, interrupted, or a combination of the above. It’s important to note that the vast majority of people who stutter know exactly what they want to say. It’s not an issue with the thinking part of the brain, but rather with the part of the brain that controls speech. This might be even more frustrating for those with a stutter, though. After all, you know you have great ideas to share, but your stutter can stand in the way.

Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021

It might seem at first like speech teletherapy is a less effective version of traditional speech therapy treatments . However, studies show that it might actually be more effective in some cases. A lot of research has been done on speech teletherapy. Wales, Skinner, & Hayman found in 2017 that it was effective in treating speech disorders in school age children. Fairweather, Lincoln, & Ramsden found in 2016 that it was helpful in expanding access to speech therapy treatments in rural populations. D Kully found in 2000 that speech teletherapy was effective as speech therapy treatments for stutters. The list goes on, but it seems clear that speech teletherapy services are effective.

Why is early intervention so important?

Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021
Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021

The reality when dealing with speech and language disorders is that the longer you live with your disorder, the more time you’ve had to develop habits around your disorder. As a result, it has been shown that the earlier your speech or language disorder is treated with speech therapy, the better your results will be. This is why it’s so important to seek speech therapy as soon as you suspect something may be wrong with your child’s speech and language development. Many children grow out of speech and language issues, but it’s important to seek professional advice regardless. If your child hasn’t started speaking by the time they’re two years old, that’s a good sign they may benefit from speech therapy.

For some people the process of making sense of the various sensory experiences we have – sight, sound, taste, touch, smell, body awareness, movement, and more – is frustrating and difficult. Sensory integration therapy exposes you to sensory stimulation in a structured & repetitive way, to help train your brain to better organize these experiences.

Why should I do accent modification? I like my accent

Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021
Sol Speech & Language Therapy | Oct 15, 2021

There is nothing wrong with having an accent! An accent is not a speech disorder – it’s a fact of language. Everybody who speaks any language at all has an accent. And if you have an accent that you like, there’s no reason why you need to do anything to change it. Some people find their accents can cause issues with their ability to be understood by the people around them, though. If this is the case with you, accent modification therapy might help you to be better understood by those here in the Austin area.
