The food was outstanding! Everything we ordered was wonderful. I had the onion soup and the scallops. My boyfriend had the potato soup and the burger. We did not bother to ask for a desert menu since the service was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. For the price point of the menu, I would naively expect that the wait staff would be trained more adequately. We sat down 10 minutes early for our 6pm reservation and that was fine, as the restaurant was still mostly empty. We got our drinks right away and our soups were delivered timely. We then waited a good 30 minutes after we finished our soups with no sign of the waiter and no entrées. Another waiter delivered our entrées, which is fine. I ordered a side of fries with my entrée and that didn’t come. Our waiter still never came to our table. He finally came about 10 minutes after we received our food and I told him the fries never came and he just stared at me. I asked him if he put the fries in with our order and he replied, “I think so?” I let him know he could take the fries off of our check, which he did. I then ordered a second drink which would have been nice to have with my meal. The waiter disappeared again, walked by our table multiple times and no drink. He then sees us just sitting, our meals are done. We sat for 15 minutes with our empty plates in front of us and he then comes over with the second drink I ordered at which point I simply asked him for the check. Needless to say, we didn’t stay for dessert, nor did the waiter bother to ask us if we would like dessert. I hope to be in Charleston again, as we love it but I can promise you, with all of the amazing dining options in Charleston, I will never be back to 39 Rue de Jean again. Advice to the owners, properly train your wait staff.
