Backup is essentially a 50/50 straight box combo. If you bet a dollar backup, it is a 50 cent box and 50 cent straight bet and if the number you bet comes out straight you will win more than if you bet a dollar box. However, if the number comes out in a different order, you will win less. For example, if I play 123, dollar backup and 123 hits straight, I will win $250 for the 50 cent straight side of the bet and 41.50 for the box side of the bet. The dollar box bet would only win 83.00. However, if the number comes out 321, then my dollar backup only pays the 50 cent box side at 41.50, the straight side pays nothing. In case, the dollar box would pay more at 83.00.
