A fun place for sure. Not very big, but appropriately so. Really enjoyed the vintage model train running (I used to operate a 24" gauge model upstate). The indoor model display is world-class. There are many interactive accessories that can be easily triggered with a simple button push. My son loved it. Really a very unique place. I'm glad we went!

Few places can make you feel the wonderment of being a child again, and this place is one of them. A spectacular interactive tribute to American ingenuity.

This is an interactive railroad museum. The kids and adults loved it! The minature train display has buttons throughout the exhibit that activate various details. We also rode a small train outside and played with toy wooden trains. Wish there was a place like this closer to home.

Great model railroad layouts; many scales. The largest one is interactive. There is a large scale locomotive that takes people around the property.

Questions & Answers

Will LIRR 39 ever steam again on the Strasburg Railroad when the fundraisers gets increased?

Brian Falzon | Oct 14, 2019
Railroad Museum of Long Island | Oct 14, 2019

Hi Brian, yes, #39 will operate at the Strasburg Rail Road for a minimum of forty-eight years once the Museum has raised its restoration goal of one million dollars.

What's going on with both the turntables in Riverhead and Greenport?

Brian Falzon | Oct 13, 2021
Railroad Museum of Long Island | Oct 13, 2021

Hi Brian, there is only one turntable at Riverhead . . . . . . . the Grand Truck Railroad 86' turntable from Fort Erie, Ontario. It remains up on wood cribbing in the Museum yard. Some day it will go in the ground to provide access to a proposed Museum exhibit hall and shop.

Are school buses allowed to park?

Brian Falzon | Oct 14, 2019
Paul Carr | Oct 14, 2019

Yes the museum welcomes school class trips. The safety of students is paramount. The students and teachers disembark in front of the museum and the buses park in designated areas. The museum has an educational charter from New York State.

I already visited the NY transit museum in Downtown Brooklyn and I now want to visit the Long Island Railroad Museum. I heard that there's more than one location. How many locations are there and what's the best place to start?

Happy New Year Epfraim! Thank you for wanting to visit our Museum in 2019! Adam is correct, the Museums are closed for the winter and will reopen in the Spring. Our Riverhead site opens at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 6 and will be open Saturdays through May 25th. Beginning May 25th through October 13th 2019, both Riverhead and Greenport Museum sites will be open on Saturdays and Sundays each week. Your admission ticket allows you entry to both Museum sites once, during the 2019 season. One advantage to visiting after May 25th is you may take a Long Island Rail Road train ride between Museum sites on the same day and make a truly exciting day of "training" on Long Island. (Train ride tickets are purchased separately from the Conductor on board the train.) Please consult our webpage here: http://rmli.org/visiting-us/ for detailed direction to the Museums and touring opportunities. Best, Don Fisher, President
