There was a terrible smell and then I saw the decaying rat. It was pretty far gone. Poorly maintained, this garden is full of weeds and mosquitos. People are in there but the gate is always locked & never open to the public. Not much of a "community". Sad. Like minded perhaps-sad nonetheless.

East Side Outside Community Garden is a wonderful spot in the East Village to visit. The current members are great and always friendly, informative, and fun. It's a peaceful spot to take a break, so you should visit if you're in the area.

Is this community garden run in a democratic manner? Evicting a member from the garden because the garden board thinks the little bit of power they have places them in an executive class, rather than serving the garden?. Is this Greenthumb's role?

As long as you are willing to conform to the unreasonable & uptight of executive leadership of this garden. you may have a chance at joining. They've made the process of becoming a member more difficult to keep out undesirables. This garden has a Caretaker who likes to breed contention among members. The leadership tends to coddle his sick behavior.
