Virginia Dojo has changed my life. If you are looking for a true Karate experience -stop looking. Sensei Roberto focuses on real world self defense applications and he has developed a sense of community that is infectious. Those of us who have made this our community cannot imagine a day -let alone a week where we do not practice Karate and share life experiences with one another. If you are at a point in your life and are looking for that "thing" please check us out. You won't regret it!

Sensei Roberto and the other teachers are very knowledgeable and patient. I love the exercise, the mental discipline, and it's fun to learn something new every time you step on the mat. In addition to the instructors, the the members are always helping each other improve, too. I wish I had started studying Karate in this dojo sooner. 2022 update: The VA Dojo has become like a second home and family. The training is serious but fun. I could never stick with a regular gym routine, but I can't wait for my next karate class. It has helped me stay fit, taught me real self-defense, and kept me sane during the pandemic. Speaking of COVID, this school has taken every precaution possible to keep us all healthy. We practiced throughout the pandemic, at first on Zoom, then in-person with safety protocols like masks, distancing, and outdoor classes. We have been adjusting as conditions change, with some classes back indoors and contact permitted between fully vaccinated participants. Sensei Roberto has always put our health above all else and we have not had any transmission between students, even during the Delta and Omicron surges. I can't say enough good things about the VA Dojo. If you are considering adult karate classes, please come check us out!

I've never felt more welcomed in a new space with new people than I did joining the crew here. Sensei Roberto was the main point of contact from the beginning, so you don't feel like you have to go through multiple channels and levels of hierarchy to communicate, and he maintains a lively and wonderful environment to learn in, as well as a great relationship with all of his students. The dojo is neat, clean, well-lit (I like spaces that have windows!), and feels very homey. There is a bathroom with a sauna, as well as a changing space. I've never done martial arts before in my life, but everyone was so nice and patient with me, and was more than happy to kindly help when I needed it. I feel like I'm learning a lot (and it's only my third class), but am also having fun and enjoying myself at the same time. The classes are a mix of students from all belt-levels, but it would never look or feel that way from an outside perspective since everyone is so willing to match the energy of those around them in order to help greener students (such as myself) feel included and comfortable. I also want to give a shout-out to Denise who has been absolutely wonderful to work with. She has worked one-on-one with me for two sessions now, and is an incredibly humble and kind teacher. I can't say enough good things about this group of martial arts masters and students, and would seriously recommend coming here whether you're looking to pursue martial arts as a serious skill, or just as a fun hobby.

Self Defense Karate is for Adults and some Teenagers. We train to survive an unexpected violent encounter. If you want to win tournaments and collect trophies, go elsewhere. Most Tae Kwon Do Karate schools will be happy to have you.

How are you different from other karate martial art places? What sets you apart?

It is based on traditional okinawan karate for self defense. It is not sport karate to look pretty. We don't do tournaments or full sparring. No one is in competition. No machismo garbage.

Yes! We enciurage people to try a few classes to ensure this self defense karate meets your expectations. We train to survive unexpected violent encounters rather than to win a tournament. We cooperate in class go maximize our learning rather than compete with each other.
