Depends on how severe the rust is to be honest. In some cases as long as you remove the rust and paint with a good coating you will be ok. In some cases if you see a lot of rust there is a very high chance it has eaten into the metal already.

It’s often the case you have to replace. If you see a lot of rust then that’s a sign. Normally rust starts from the inside out.
