Our 11yo just came back from her first camp experience and she's the happiest, most peaceful creature there is! We sent her there hoping she would make friends (she's homeschooled), built confidence and just continue seeing the world as a kind loving place where it is ok to be vulnerable. It was an excellent choice! The kids are not the entitled bratty kind and the camp does not encourage comparisons (I was shocked to watch stagedoor manor doc and the fierce competition of finding yourself on a worthiness scale they facilitate). Her bunk counselors - Onga and Dorien - were awesome and most helpful beings when it came to heart drama (she also says everyone who works there is super talented! Even the bunk supervisors). In other words she sadly admitted not to have missed us at all... She also loved the food and stayed vegetarian too... I appreciate the fact that there are no vending machines, no processed snacks and no carbonated drinks. And oh yes! She still doesn't know how French fries tastes bc there was none of that junk. Cons: The guy that she had romantic feelings towards was "up the-bunk"))); Over the four weeks I have not heard a single word from her as camp does not let them call and the 6 letters she sent never made it to us. Also, the amazon prime only made it to her two weeks later and one day before departure. Otherwise everything else was superbly organized and flying as an unaccompanied minor went smooth too. Thank you, Sarah and Jon!

Our teenager went here and had an awesome time. The only downside was that one of the bathrooms was painted and in doing so, they painted over the messages left on the wall by previous attendees. Some of these messages were very special and personal and this was very wrong for the camp admin to do without preserving the messages.

My 12 year old returned home with a spark in her eye and with a smile on her face and MANY sketches, drawings and fun stories about camp… She told me she loved the diversity and inclusion. She said she tried new things like tap dancing ,playing drums and yoga. She loved making new friends that share her interest in art. She will be going next summer for a month! This year we tried it out for two weeks and she absolutely loved it.

Great place to get your inner artist out and have fun when doing so.

Our staff is a mixture of university students, graduate students, young professionals, and professional artists. Or minimum hiring age is 19. We look primarily for kind people who make interesting work and have both a desire to work with and a respect for children. We certainly have some very experienced teachers: up to 25% of our staff are professional artists whose children also attend camp. But we also appreciate the energy and playfulness of our college-aged staff members who are in a period of artistic discovery themselves.
Pretty busy from morning till night, but there is a lot of self-directed time throughout the day. I've never heard my kid (5 yrs attending) say they were bored.
We are a small camp with a well-staffed professional foodservice, so we are able to accommodate a wide range of dietary restrictions. We are a nut-free campus, and our standard foodservice always includes vegetarian, vegan, and cross-contamination free gluten-free food; so no special accommodations need to be made for even the strictest vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets. We mark all food trays with colored clips to indicate foods that contain dairy, are vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free. We also mark food trays that contain any allergen that a member of our community is sensitive to, such as coconut or blueberry. We have a seperate “seed table” for seeds and any foods containing seeds, as there is sometimes cross-reactivity to seeds in people with nut allergies.
There are many options of food at camp. Vegan, vegitarian, dairy free, gluten free and even nut/seed free. Most of the cooks are from different parts of the world, and usually bring in food from their culture. At every meal there are many amazing options to choose from. There are also very traditional meals. Camp ballibay provides healthy, home cooked meals for each and every camper. The camp also has a garden, and most times the campers can harvest items from the garden and use them in meals. In the rare event that a camper doesn't like anything that is being served, they may ask a kitchen staff member for something and they will gladly make it for them. You can expect new and and well known meals that campers love.
Counselors-in-Training start at 16, but most full-time staff tend to be college-aged or above. Counselors also tend to have experience in an artistic field. There is more info on the website: https://www.campballibay.com/work-at-arts-camp/. The schedule for this summer is there too.
For your child, you can buy it on-line, during the registration process. If you are a camp alumnus, give us a call: 570-747-3223
