The Needles Airport has an interesting history as a remote Mojave Desert airfield near the Colorado River border for California and Arizona. The Federal Aviation Administration operated a Flight Service Station here to give transit pilots personal weather briefings and contribute to the national weather service knowledge of regional weather patterns. Modern computer technology and satellites have replaced the old hands-on briefings. This location was once a vital link in the the American aviation transportation system. The airport has seen better days, but the future always holds new opportunities. I hope the flight service station may find historic protection someday. The runways are maintained by the County of San Bernardino for public use. It is a fun destination to discover with its unique history.
