The division has no one with any legal or business experience to assist disabled elders, etc. Just ex-drama student drop-outs and lazy, day-dreaming bureaucrats permanently on vacation. It all sounds credible but when it comes to administering anything they are clueless. Amateurs essentially winging it with your hard earned money and time. Useless. Call a circus for help instead.

This department is amazing! I live out of state, but had a business transaction with a small business based in Utah. I was unhappy with the service provided (business was supposed to repair an item that was mailed in, but the item sent back to me was not fixed, but said it had been) and refused to issue a refund. It was a challenge as it turned into a he said/she said debate as we could not both be in the same place with a neutral third party to verify the working order of the "repaired" item. I mailed the item it to the Consumer Protection Division as they were a third party and they were in agreement with me that the item was not working. Two agents visited the service provider in person and I was finally given a refund by the business. It took a few months, but I was made whole.

They don’t care. I feel hopeless. Don’t bother. They just take their paycheck but they never check your case.

Questions & Answers

Is it legal for a mechanic to complete repairs to your vehicle without you signing an agreement showing the cost of the repairs.

Fawn Bennett | Oct 9, 2020
Consumer Protection Division | Aug 10, 2022

A mechanic must obtain your express authorization for repairs, inspections, or other services. Before authorizing anything, make sure that the mechanic has discussed the following things with you: Anticipated repairs, inspection or other services to be performed Estimated charges for those repairs, inspections or other services; and The reasonably expected completion date of such repairs, inspection or other services to be performed. If the repair, inspection, or other service will cost more than $50.00, the mechanic must provide you with a copy or transcript of your authorization on or before the time that you receive a bill. A mechanic also must obtain your express authorization for additional, unforeseen, but necessary, repairs, inspections, or other services if their cost amounts to 10% or more of your original estimate. Generally, it is always a good idea to ask for a written estimate outlining costs for both parts and labor before any work is performed.

The Utah Division of Consumer Protection regulates some businesses and charities within the state. At this time, I'm not seeing any registered entities under that name in our database. However, if you'd like to call (801) 530-6601 or visit dcp.utah.gov with any more specific questions about that company, we're happy to accommodate.
