Hold time was just over an hour. But.... well worth it. I was set up with a phone meeting. I tried to go to the office in person and was told that in person meetings were only for emergency situations.
Social Security offices have been open by appointment only since early in the pandemic. There is very limited staff in the building, and a drop off box for leaving documents. Best to call for an appointment before going.

Swing by the office. Go to the little computer they have near the door and start with getting your number in line bring her birth certificate and proof of address along with your id. You may be able to do it online since its a copy. You may be able to call your local address and ask for a copy. No matter how you do it it will only come in the mail.
Stop by during business hours for walk-in service during normal Office /business hours and get a number.
I believe you have to wait till 63 when retirement benefits are paid. With that being said if you have a minor child up to thr age of 18 or until finishing high schoolor an adult child up to 26 who is in college. They can get survivors benefits.
