A nice glimpse of what the forest in this part of the country looked like before our country expanded west of the Appalachians. Pleasant picnic areas. Clean, mowed and cool in the heat of summer. Campsites are well dispersed, and mainly on the ridge top, with decent airflow on summer nights. On those cooler nights search for the campsites with three-sided shelters (built by the CCC) that include fireplaces. During your visit be sure to reflect on the name of the state forest and the meaning behind it. We must pay attention to all aspects of history and make sure to improve the future for everyone.

Love this place always beautiful

I make a habit of learning about the histories of the places I love, geological and otherwise. The land formations and bedrock outcroppings have a very fascinating geological history, but there is a very dark history of the trail of tears. The land is beautiful but I can't help but almost feel the sorrow that has made it's mark there.

Yes, they have several different sites to camp at
I live nearby. There are none that I know of.
Park is not staffed very often. It is remotely managed from Giant City. I'd call Giant City if you cant get ahold of someone.
check reserveamerica.com to see what's reserved. then it's first come first served. Probably sites available and you can self register at the white barn on State Forest road.
