A great tour of the island. The guide, Jake Grossman, was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. The price of the tour was $30. Round trip on the ferry was $23 so total cost is $53 per person. This includes admission to both the lighthouse and the museum. Well worth it.

Can't do Bald Head without climbing Old Baldy! Great views from the top. Steps are steep, and you basically climb a ladder to get to the top, but worth the steps up and back down. Staff at the museum and gift shop are very nice and knowledgeable.

There is a marina where the ferry pulls into that fits mid size boats. Not sure of the draw.
Website says they are only closed on Xmas Eve/Day and News Years Eve. Shows open on Saturdays 10-4.

Bald Head Island, which is part of Smith Island, got its nickname fromthe dunes on the south beach. Thedunes, along the island, eventually became worn down and resembled a bald head. It was decided to place a lighthouse on Bald Head Island to guide ships through the channels and sandbars of the Cape Fear River.
It is closed Sunday and Monday. Saw a lot of people get confused cause the island is open but the lighthouse is close those days.
About a five minute walk... Not far
The first Bald Head Light was built in 1794 closer to the mouth of the Cape Fear River, on Bald Head Point. It had to be torn down due to shoreline erosion in 1813. The second Bald Head Light, "Old Baldy," was built further back from the shoreline, in 1817.
Ooo, that's a great question (I think you mean marker...) . I took a picture of it when we were there in early September. Let me see if I can find the pic and type what it says... REVOLUTIONARY WAR FORT - British troops constructed Fort George to defend Bald Head Island and their warships' anchorage at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. American forces attacked the fort, but were repulsed, in early September 1776. This was believed to be the first amphibious operation in American military history. (From the marker across the street from Old Baldy.)
