Driving down Old Highway 61, hungry because the place we originally wanted to go was packed, we passed through Barnum. I saw the Rustic Diner and asked everyone if they wanted to stop. Yes! So we tried out this tiny restaurant in this little town. We received some stares as we were definite outsiders. A table was available. Services was quick and very good. The menu has a good selection of items for breakfast and lunch. Three of us had burgers and one had a breakfast skillet. My burger was GREAT! I had a double cheeseburger. The patties are about 1/3 pound, so it was a big sandwich. The burger was was beautifully cooked, nice and juicy, with a wonderful seasoning. The Garbage Skillet looked really good and I was told it was. The Rustic Diner is a place that would be easy to drive by but DON'T. It is well worth a detour.

The Rustic Diner, formerly Lou's Diner, is one of the last good old cafes that one can find locally! Closed early in the week, and only open 7 am - 2 pm, most days, this diner is worth adjusting your hours for! Serves breakfast all day long. It's small in capacity but certainly accommodate singles to family size parties. There is a counter to sit at if preferred. Don't see that much anymore! The family owned diner will remember you and greet you warmly! The owners will be waiting on people and cooking in the kitchen! My 2 favorite meals are #88 for breakfast! This is similar to a skillet. There's sausage, onions, green peppers, I think, all atop of hash browns with your choice of eggs atop as well. The best part is the con queso sauce that is on top! I ask for jalapenos too! Then, the marble rye toast makes the meal ideal!!! It's reasonably priced! Just like the entire menu! This is quality, homemade food that isn't going to break you! The portions will please! I feel guilty paying so little for such a spectacular meal! My second favorite at the Rustic is the bacon cheeseburger and fries! I always get a raw onion on mine. It's so tasty and hearty! The meal fills you up! There is no blandness on this menu! ALSO, you can call ahead and get a to-go meal and they do catering as well! This is the best place to eat for miles and miles!

Stopped in here after getting turned away with hour long wait times at almost every other breakfast place. And I'm so glad that we did! The food was delicious, the serving sizes were amazing, especially with the pricing. The atmosphere was great, our waitress was phenomenal, everything overall was absolutely amazing! Specifically my friends just could not stop complimenting the toast. You've gotta be something special to impress people with just your toast. You could tell just from the other customers how meaningful this place is to the community, they were all so friendly. I'm going to recommend this place to every person I know coming up this way. Absolutely deserve these five stars!
