In the 80s in Long Beach, CA I studied Kenpo Karate up to Green Belt Level on my way to Brown and then life got in the way. 36 years later when I was turning 65 years old, I decided that I was either going to sit in a chair and become way overweight or I was going to get up and move and get in shape and live the last part of my life with a quality of life that I was starting to lose. After studying about all the dojos here in Middle Tennessee, in my research I found Sensei O'Riley's Karate Studios and Wado-Ryu Karate. This form of Karate was similar to Kenpo but more important was the skill level of the Sensei and his Instructors both male and female. Also the loyalty that Sensei O'Riley insists remains in his teaching of this form of Karate that has been handed down from Japan over the years. When I started my training again I was unable to do 5 crunches or 5 squats. I am now doing 30 each three times a week or more. I am without exaggeration letting you know that because of Sensei O'Riley and The O'Riley Karate Centers and MY Commitment, my body has gotten Younger! In the Last 3 years and at almost 68 my endurance and stamina and strength have all improved. So has my flexibility, speed and balance. While people my age are losing their abilities, mine are improving. As my skill level is increasing a transformation is beginning to take place in my body. I have not lost a lot of weight but that is because I have gained muscle mass (at almost 68!) and lost fat. All my clothes are now fitting looser. My cardiologist at my last exam has told me that my heart is stronger now than it was 13 years ago. This is all directly related to My Commitment and the training at O'Riley's Karate Centers. I have been a Gen. Manager Of Businesses and a Teacher In my career. I can tell you that Sensei O'Riley will teach you and /or your children not only an invaluable art form of self defense but life skills that will help you or them as you make your way through our ever changing world. Wado-Ryu will teach you respect for one another and discipline and loyalty. It is my recommendation that you give O'Riley's Karate Studios a try if you are seeking a form of self defense art and skill. Both of his dojos are clean and well equipped and the students all become a part of a Wado-Ryu Family to support their training.
