The Fishtrap South Loop Trail is my favorite part of Fishtrap Recreation Area that is under the Bureau of Land Management. From the TH the trail is clearly marked by occasional posts with a red dot. Part off the hike is abandoned jeep track, part single track path. Some is out in the open and some in pine forest. I go counterclockwise using the south gate. You quickly enter Columbia Plateau transition from prairie to sparse pine first. There are numerous ponds and small channels. But long, narrow Fishtrap Lake is your prize. You'll have a hard time deciding the most beautiful spot. See the lake down low or up on a sheer cliff. Wander out on a little peninsula for a rewarding view. As the trail heads away from the lake it shares the north loop (blue dot) trail a ways. Eventually at a three-way intersection you follow a marshy gully back to the TH at the north gate. You can also access trails from Miller Ranch and the North Loop TH. BLM maps can be obtained from the THs or online.

Yes that's right. The whole place is totally wide open, all the time. Even though it's a special recreational area, it feels like any other BLM land.
I think it is....
