My service rep was very helpful, but the good news ends there. Going through the underwriting process was difficult because their website is not intuitive to use. Even when I upload required documents, the underwriter does not see it until I call her. This was a pain. After getting the mortgage, what I hated most was constant bombardment of mortgage insurance. They send out countless fliers that are deceptive. It just says this is urgent and important time sensitive information from your lender, please call us, without telling why. It's to sell insurance. My other mortgage company does not do that. After I hang up realizing the sales, I get nonstop calls back saying they're returning my call because I was interested insurance. I never was. I simply returned a message that said urgent. Completely annoying. Stay away. Their rates are average. Not worth the headache and hassle. I've had a much better experience with my previous lender.

Don't bank here. Horrible customer service. They don't do money orders. I gave them a year. After experiencing a far superior credit union before I moved into New Jersey, I'm moving on.

Do NOT apply for a loan with these people. And if you don't believe me or the others here, just check the Google reviews for any PenFed in any town/city near you. Their advertised rates are OH SO TEMPTING, but DON'T DO IT. They are misinformed, will do a hard credit pull, then be unavailable to finish the process, leaving your credit dinged. Why? Simple. Their business model is NOT to be a premier government/military member-driven lending institution, but rather scam business doing the bare minimum to profit itself. How? Simple they promise competitive rates and ambitious closing dates/costs for their credit cards/loans. They do a hard credit pull. They tell you that they need you to open up an account with a minimum deposit. Then they ghost you like your favorite dating app's true love. Sure they'll pop in every week or so to tell you they need just one or two more documents. Then they'll ghost you again. Now you're being breadcrumb'd. And then you pass up other more reasonable offer from other more reputable institutions bc you're afraid of another hard credit pull or their rates just aren't as unbelievably low as PenFeds. Weeks turn into months and now you've go nothing but a trail of frustration. Meanwhile they have duped THOUSANDS of people into depositing $5 into their virtual vault and are bragging to new suckers (and government regulatory agencies) that they are solvent, with growing numbers of new members! How do I know? I'm heading towards the 6 month mark on a VA home refinance and have heard every scam excuse for "delays" on setting a closing date. "The underwriter needs this or that." "That last form you sent us 2 months ago is now out of date, can you send us a new one?" "We need you to get an official form from this institution." "We need a statement from your retirement account." "We need to re-verify your employment again." "We need your insurance information updated again" All the stuff that is THEIR job. If you haven't dealt with them, save yourself and only use their low rates to have a reputable institution match it. If you have already been burned, file a complaint with HUD, FDIC, and/or CFPB. In some cases, you may even want to go to you state Attorney General. Good luck.
