Takes forever to speak with someone, no one knows what they are talking about, the answer is always to fill out another form, even if the error wasn't on my part. Taxation is theft, anyway.

Having been previously frustrated with the inability to get call backs from the DOR I was pleased to have a prompt return call from Victoria Wright. She was knowledgeable, patient and overall able to help me with all my questions.

I work here. The people are cool. The job is super easy. They don't micromanage. I don't care for the mandatory retirement coming out of my paychecks, but it's still a good job.

Stephanie did an outstanding job! She was friendly, professional and knowledgeable. She put to rest a problem that numerous others in the organization failed to do. Her boss needs to acknowledge her great performance.

On form 140, line 29b, does this pertain to military retirement benefits being 100% reduction from income for state taxes?

Raul Acuna | Apr 8, 2022
Arizona Department of Revenue | Apr 8, 2022

As a general rule, the same portion of an individual’s pension is taxable for Arizona purposes as it is for federal. Arizona does allow, however, a subtraction for pensions from the state of Arizona, its political subdivisions or from U.S. government service, including the U.S. military. Beginning with tax year 2021, if you received benefits, annuities, and pensions as retired or retainer pay of the uniformed services of the United States, you may subtract 100% of the amount you received. If both you and your spouse each received such income, each spouse may subtract 100% of the amount received.

The removal of the Arizona lottery subtraction applies retroactively to taxable years beginning from and after December 31, 2018. This means Arizona taxpayers will not be able to subtract Arizona state lottery prizes or winnings up to $5,000 when they file their 2019 Arizona income tax return in calendar year 2020.

In AZ's itemized deductions in the state tax, medical expenses used to be deductible. If you do not itemize for the federal, is medical expense still deductible in AZ state?v

Jag Jagannathan | Oct 6, 2019
Arizona Department of Revenue | Oct 6, 2019

Taxpayers may claim itemized deduction on the state return even if if they take the standard deduction on federal return. Because Arizona’s itemized deductions are based on the federal itemized deductions, a taxpayer who takes the federal standard deduction in lieu of itemized deductions, is required to complete the 2018 federal Schedule A and include it with the Arizona tax return to itemize for Arizona. If the taxpayer is making any adjustments, for Arizona tax purposes, the taxpayer also completes Arizona Schedule A and includes both the federal and state schedules with his/her tax return when filed.

If I draw a pension in Arizona but am a resident of another state do I have to pay Arizona taxes?

Michael Pickett | Oct 6, 2019
Arizona Department of Revenue | Oct 6, 2019

Residency determines which state may tax the pension income. Public Law 104-95 (which applies to certain pension income received after December 31, 1995) prohibits a state from imposing an income tax on certain types of retirement/pension income of an individual who is not a resident or domiciliary of such state. Section 114 of Public Law 104-95 defines what ‘retirement income’ is for the purposes of the Act. Simply, only the state of residency may tax this type of pension. For example, if the taxpayer is a nonresident of Arizona and receives pension income from Arizona, that taxpayer’s state of residency may tax that income. Arizona does not tax the pension income.
