I just recently moved to I.L and setting up an appointment through the Joliet center has been nothing less than a nightmare. After 3 failed attempts at setting up an appointment, and then setting up an appointment with a completely wrong specialists I had enough and called the Hines VA Center. Lisa, the triage nurse in the MH department at Hines has been a saint and has helped me out tremendously! In my opinion, she should be recognized for her performance. She not only addressed and corrected the issues that Joliet caused, but went above her duties to then follow up with me on day of appointment to make sure everything went smoothly for me. I can only hope the Joliet facility can designate their concerns to the employees that speak with the Veterans first-hand and assist setting up their appointments. First impressions can mean everything when it comes to the care a Veteran receives.

Mr. Levell with patient escort helped me have an easier experience navigating Hines VA today! I appreciate the wonderful staff and escorts hired like him daily that keep that VA functioning. You never know how you can make someone’s day. His patience to walk me to where I needed on such a difficult day completely turned my day around.

It is so frustrating when I try to make a mental health appointment, but the first available just for intake is 2 months out.... Seriously??! I'm rated 70% just for mental health alone, so that should tell you something. I was going to my appointments at the Joliet va clinic, seeing a social worker. That care was just.... OK.... But it was care. I stopped going when covid hit because, well, covid. (I was too scared to see anyone during that time.) Because it has been over a year, I've been told I need to do intake again for mental health. Fine, whatever. I think that's absolutely crazy, but whatever. But then I'm told the next appointment with Hines isn't for two months... Just for intake... And then I'll have to wait AGAIN for an actual appointment. That's absolutely crazy! This is WHY there is such bad stereotypes when it comes to the VA. A veteran, who is seeking out mental health, shouldn't have to wait for 2 months for an intake appointment. I shouldn't have to consider calling a hotline because the VA is failing to have reasonable wait times so an intake appt. You're making it way too hard for a veteran to get mental health help. Do better.

You can apply for a VA card if thats what you mean. It is through veterans affairs and can be used at va centers but is not a retirement card or the state ids that say vetetan on them.
If you qualify for it. That would require authorization through your provider, and others, within the facilities system. It would be best to call and ask. Good luck!
