At least 5-6 hours hike. Pretty challenging one as to me. Snow gear may be useful on top. Also think of a pair of sticks for easier balance between rocks while walking.

Very pretty hike. The last half mile there is snow, spikes are very helpful. Round trip doing Bridal Veil Falls and Lake Serene was 8.5 mile and 2850 feet elevation gain. We went straight to Lake Serene and then did Bridal Veil Falls on the way back. Be ready for your calves to burn.

Nice and sweet hike to the falls, not that busy .. surprised.. though i bet in the summer it’s a packed trail as it’s easy access from vehicles. we skipped the lake as i it’s week 3 since back surgery and didn’t want to push it.

The home up the the falls isn't all to bad it's a good hike up. The reward is beyond that i was expecting. Really worth the effort. I'm a big guy and hike up to lake Serene was a challenge. But a fun One for sure as you get many nice views of the valley on the way up. Oh and that lake with the snow melting off and those tall mountain peaks are all so very special. You'll be happy that you pushed yourself to make it to the top. Enjoy!

Yes you do need a permit. You need the Northwest Forest pass you can buy a day pass for $5 or the year pass for $30 I think. I use an app on my phone when looking for trails. It's called AllTrails. Super helpful.
You can't camp (legally) within 1/4 mile of the lake, but there are a few flat areas that are well-sheltered around the trail.
I went from the trailhead to the falls, then on to Lake Serene, then back to the trailhead. It ended up being 12.6 miles according to my FitBit.
Bridal Veil is only 4miles out and back. With young ones, it can easily be a 2 hour hike. To Lake Serene is 8.2 miles. Figure 4-5 hours. I think it's very kid friendly if you're a responsible parent. It should be noted that these trails are closed till the end of August 2018.
The lake screne is closed
