Tough drive but great view

This is an extremely difficult drive for those with only the tough vehicles with the best suspensions and/or 4wd. ( I call it the road of A MILLION patches). It is BUMPY, curvy, and there are very few, if any guard rails. And there are 200+ foot straight down cliffs just a few feet away from ur vehicle. After a short walk to the bridge, which has 3 flights down, a ways across and then another 3 flights up, then just a football field length to a rock path down to the water where the most gorgeous pool of nice, crisp, cold water awaits. Unfortunately , there was a posted sign warning of "harmful algae" in the water that u can't allow ur kids or pets to drink. Also, unfortunate, no rock collecting is allowed. But still, VERY private & absolutely beautiful place to enjoy California waters

Beautiful spot. Never crowded and plenty of room for everyone. Plenty of different rocks and Cliffs of different heights for different levels of thrill-seekers jumping into the cool but not cold water. Fairly easy hike which I only consider a short walk of less than half a mile mostly flat ground. My kids and I love it here

On Camp 9? No

Is there any bears?

Yes there are bears in the area although doubtful you would run into one because they prefer higher elevations.

How did Camp 9 get it's name

Got its name From The Nine Mile Stretch of the Stanislaus River that used to be some of California's best white water rafting. It is mostly underwater now since the construction of New Melones Dam. Actually the water right now is very low in New Melones and part of this pristine white water is able to be rafted. The swimming area with a nice Beach and killer Rock jumping area is at the end of the road at the powerhouse just across the Footbridge. Follow the trail for a few hundred yards and it will take you there. It's just out of sight up the river from where you park at the end of the road

Is the camp nine river area still acessable or is it private property

Open to the public. Posted: No Camping although I can't see L.E. going all the way there to enforce. Been there half a dozen times in the last couple of months with no L.E. ever present or on the 9 mile road (Camp 9 rd) from Parrotts Ferry rd to the powerhouse/parking
