Why is saliva important to your teeth and gums?

Jeff Corbet, DDS | Oct 1, 2020
Jeff Corbet, DDS | Oct 1, 2020

Saliva has many functions that help in your body's defenses against decay and gum problems. First, saliva lubricates the mouth and helps food pass throught he stomach. If food remains around the teeth, it becomes a growing ground for the bacteria that cause decay and gingivitis. The saliva also helps keep your gums moist and less susceptible to irritation. Second, saliva helps neutralize acids. If the acid content remains high in your mouth, the enamel will start to demineralize and be more susceptible to decay. Saliva also has proteins that coat your teeth to protext them from acids and a substance called mucins that assist in remineralizing the enamel in your teeth.
