Good place to stay (well, the only place to stay) on the island. The cabins have running water, gas kitchens, and bathrooms. They’re also wired for generators so you can turn on the lights and bring your own appliances. The bunk beds have twin mattresses on them. We stayed here for a night in August without a generator and any sort of ventilation. The cabin was obviously pitch black, but our flashlights were more than enough for us. It was 80 degrees but the wind blowing in from the ocean cooled down the cabin at night to the point where we were actually pretty chilly. The cabins are pretty weathered and barebones though. Don’t expect anything glamorous. Look at it as a slightly nicer tent with a kitchen and bathroom. Bring insect repellent. The mosquitos were not so bad but there were biting sand flies that swarmed down on us and our dogs at night. Any regular mosquito repellent should work just the same on them. Thankfully the cabins do have netting on the windows and front porch so no bugs got inside at night. It was just when we were sitting around the bonfire outside.

I’ll keep it brief. You have to know what to expect. 1 - The cabins have a toilet and shower, gas stove, and I presume oven but we didn’t use that. 2 - The cabins are wired for electricity but you have to hook up you generator in the little generator shed. Caine have over head lights if you bring a generator. 3 - The ranger station sells ice 4 - we we’re here in July, there are mosquitoes, biting flies, and gnats. Being repellent 5 - We had problems with ants. Any crumb that fell would have ants sitting 2 hours. So if you have kids. Fair warning. We used some bug spray to help with that. If your kids do the National Parks Junior Ranger program they have a booklet and pin for the island. Overall we had a good time. It was windy and rain off and on which out a damper on the beach time but it was nice not being crowded. The light house is about a 35 minute drive down the sand. Very cool location.

Questions & Answers

We will be making our way down tomorrow for week of camping. Any suggestions on great seafood restaurants in the area? We moved to Rhode Island at the end of last year but are coming down to North Carolina permanently next month.

None, the cord to the cabin is under the shelter where the generator goes. It's just a regular 110 plug.

Is it possible to get a 2WD SUV to cabin 24?

It will all depend on how compact the sand is going to that particular cabin when you go. However, everytime I've ever been, the sand is always the softest and deepest as you head to the later numbered cabins. Any cabins as you turn left from the ranger station are typically easy to get to because the sand is normally compacted and any cabins as you turn right from the ranger station are along paths that have deeper ruts and much softer sand to drive through.
