Parents BEWARE!!! Serious safety concerns! Today we witnessed a group of 8-9 year old children at this camp in a sailing lesson which went horribly wrong! One of the small sail boats with 4 young children got left behind, went adrift, and calls for help by them went unanswered. Two of the scared young girls then decided to abandon the boat and attempt to swim the very long way back but got caught in the current pulling them even further away - the current & winds were strong on Lake Wylie. We yelled to them to swim back to the boat and thankfully several witnesses raced to rescue the kids and the boat and managed to get them onto a dock. The young sailing instructor and lifeguard had still not yet noticed and certainly very far out of reach. An R.H. resident called the camp asking for a responsible person to come pick up the 4 children and get them safely back to the camp. It wasn’t until after that the young instructor even showed up. Defensive and embarrassed, the instructor and lifeguard had no apology to offer and avoided coming to the dock or speaking to the rescuers. Finally the camp assistant who was called came on a motor boat and with the help of several volunteers, docked and retrieved the children. The witnesses/volunteers, all of whom were very upset, insisted on speaking to the camp director but the instructor, life guard and Assistant on the motorboat refused to allow it. Calls to the camp were not returned. Parents, don’t assume your kids are safe here. As parents, witnesses and rescuers, we were all left terrified for the safety of YOUR children. Beware!

They will normally send a list. All I sent my girl last year were her clothes for everyday, extra just in case, shoes, Sandler, toiletries, towels, swim suit, no extra money is really needed. Gracie had a super time and is going back this year.

I went there there omg is really nice and relaxing I enjoyed I want to know if I can go any day to the park with my family and have a picnic 🧺????? Thanks

Unfortunately its a private camp they dont have access for visitors. I would suggest McDowell Nature Preserve for a quiet place on Lake Wylie for picnics. Free access and parking too.

Can my camper bring a GoPro to camp with her?

Yes she may, but if she loses it the camp is not liable.

is this an all boy camp?

Meager, this is a boy and girl camp. As Tyler stated the genders are separated. I recommend this camp 100%. You will not be disappointed by choosing Camp Thunderbird.

Camp Thunderbird is a YMCA of Greater Charlotte Day Camp and Resident Camp that is open during the Summer for school aged kids. If you are over 18 you may apply to be a counselor.

Can family's of four go to camp there or do you have to be a chaperone for your kids? 😕

Anna Garcia | Sep 30, 2017
Renee Lewis | Sep 30, 2017

No you don't have to be a chaperone. If need be also they have financial aid and payment plans. If your children have never gone believe me they will have a blast. I'm planning on sending my granddaughter back this year.
