I've hiked this trail at least 15 times. For a moderate hiker needing a couple of breaks, it can take about 1hr to ascend. It's popular for a sunrise hike; if that's what you want then expect Rainier to be in shadows since the sun rises behind it. Without snowshoes or a snowmobile, I've hiked it in late spring, through the summer, and in late fall (early December). Good hike with kids small enough to carry or kids old enough to know to stay away from a cliff's edge. My dog loved the hike too. The trailhead is 9 miles off of Skate Creek Rd. up a gravel mountain road.

Late Post 7-7-2022 - My 5th time here at High Rock Lookout and my first time doing a sunset hike and it was pure magical!

It’s all worth it. All the way from Florida we flew to this other side of the continent. Our hearts sank when we saw the snow on the road going there. But we persisted and was rewarded with a stunning sight overlooking Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helen,Mt. Adams and other views all around and down.

There have been 2 reports of cougar tracks in the area so bear spray would be something I recommend bringing.
Probably. But it all depends on the snow level at the time. I've hiked it in December in past years.
As of two weeks ago the road was snowed over about 1.5 miles from the trailhead and there was quite a bit of snow on the trail, though the summit itself was bare. It's definitely doable, I'd just plan for some snow hiking and add a little extra mileage to the hike
Any car can make it, big potholes for last 3 miles
3.1 miles rt if the snow has melted enough that allows you to park at the trailhead. The TH is outside the park.
Yes. Pets are allowed. I've seen many people bring their dogs here. The trail is narrow, so please make sure your pet is people-friendly when passing other hikers and bring a doggie bag to pick up after their messes!
The trail itself is not technical, however, it is an incline the whole way and may be a bit strenuous if you're not accustom to steep elevation gain. To get to the top it will require scrambling over rock which can be challenging to come down. There are steep drop offs near the top. Weather can be unpredictable so check conditions. If you do go the views are amazing!!!!!
