We foster teens, mainly teen boys. Three of our teen boys completed the program: one in one class and the other two in a later class. All now have their GEDs and are glad they went. It is an awesome program.

It has been one year. One year since I was refused medical care until I could barely walk and genuinely thought I was near death. While this place did have some good aspects, such as lifelong friendships and simply learning how to come …

We had custody of our grandson who we enrolled at HYCA in 01/15. Our grandson wasn’t the typical recruit going to HYCA, he didn’t have have any drug or disciplinary problems but he was extremely socially awkward. People may wonder why we looked to send him there, it was because he was a prime candidate to be accepted into gangs or groups which could have sent him down that path. We needed a place that would build his self esteem and confidence. It was truly an eye opening experience for him, but he focused on what was expected of him and his school work. He ended up with the high academic award and placed extremely high on the armed forces battery test, high enough he could have his choice of military careers. After graduating HYCA he went back and finished his senior year at high school and received his core 40 diploma. He enrolled in the Navy just before graduation and was accepted into the nuclear propulsion program. He transferred to the sonar program for submarines and is now a sonar tech on a ballistic missile sub in Washington state. We really feel that the HYCA program was instrumental in his success, it helped his self confidence and pointed him in a direction that kept him from being swallowed up in wasted future.

I believe it is only 16 & up. Im not too sure but a great program it is! I was in Class 17.
Must be 16 by the time of graduation
The first couple of weeks are a boot camp type of experience and then a more regular boarding school it's 5 and a half month program I believe
You might want to check if your state has one first, but I don't believe you can enter from another state.
We started class 29 with around 100 cadets halfway through we are at 67
Yes just contact his parents for his cadet information to write him letters. They have a class where they encourage to write back.
The HYCA academy is an alternative program. Free and paid for by the government as it's staffed and maintained by the military and ex Military ect. Just contact your nearest HYCA recruiter and they'll be able to meet and tell you all that you need to know. It's an extremely easy process. And this program is amazing and growing more and more every day. As they have been up and running for 13 yrs I believe. You're sun will thrive in there if he chooses to deep down. I had alot of problems growing up and getting affiliated with this academy has saved my life and my education.
Or he can write you first.
Three times a day. Two before lunch and one after lunch. They live in barracks
Yes, my daughter just completed the first part of the program. 5 1/2 months on site residence and then 6 months at home with monthly check-ins with a mentor. Kids have to study and pass the tests, but they can have it all when they leave
I believe cadets still get home pass for Thanksgiving for 2 weeks. When I attended HYCA, that was the only home pass we had. As far as phones go, you are not allowed to have cell phone. Each cadet will be issued one phone call every sunday.
Yes you can, and should. Letters are very important. You need to contact her family. They should be able to give you the address and instructions.
Yes, there is a list of available items that they can have on the website. I'm unsure on jewelry, I sent things such as hygiene items and shoes, pics
No, it is not possible to visit her.

The challenge academy is for 16-18 yo and it is voluntary only. It is a great place, but if your child refuses to go, they will not make him.
