Great positive learning atmosphere for a beauty school

JD Academy is amazing! They have such a wide range of services for such great prices. I've tried everything from haircuts to highlights to facials to just hairstyling. Every girl I've worked with has been extremely professional and friendly. The teachers always walk around and check the students work before you leave so you always have what you want. Since the students are still students, expect to be here a little bit longer than you would at a normal hair salon! My hair in this photo was done by a student who has since graduated!

For those considering enrollment: 1) You get 36 absent hours. That's it. After that you are paying $15 an hour for every additional hour of school. 2) They are extremely understaffed and many of their teachers are undertrained. The ones who are experienced and educated are overworked and are therefor snappy and rude. 3) Make sure to read over the conduct policy VERY carefully. They use it against you at every available opportunity. I had a panic attack in class due to my anxiety disorder and the teacher yelled at me, I told her I needed to leave, grabbed my things and left. I was promptly written up the next day for "unprofessional behavior that disrupted her class". 4) You are not allowed to "refuse a client." On a few occasions me or a classmate were not feeling well mentally. The pandemic has taken a tole on all of our mental health and physical energy and my class was such a tight knit group. Some days it would be so hard to take a client. I'd be crying in the bathroom minutes before I was supposed to do a service. This once happened on my birthday. I told the teachers I would like to give my client to one of my fellow students who was happy to take the client for me and had the available time. I was told on several occasions that if I did not perform the service on the client I would be sent home, forfeiting my education for the evening and using up some of my very few absent hours. Please note that this was even though a classmate could have taken my client and ended up being forced to anyways since they were sending me home. I was also not showing signs of sickness, I was just struggling mentally and could not perform an hour long service. I would have been able to work on theory or on a dollhead or classmate, but not a paying customer. 5) You are not compensated for your work, which makes sense as it is a school and counts as "education". Yet on some occasions we were expected to take 3 clients back to back which leaves no time for a lunch break or any actual education for the entire school day. Yes, it does count as experience, but teachers were not teaching us anything while we did services. We were working for free and making the school money. We would receive the occasional tip which was greatly appreciated! Clients are booked for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday so on those days expect very little theory work and actual education. 6) The topics of conversation by my instructor with the class often took an unprofessional turn. On a government holiday, we read the first 13 amendments in class, then our instructor informed us that she doesn't vote and had us discuss why voting is useless and actually discouraged us from voting. This was extremely unprofessional behavior and made me so uncomfortable. Students argued with teachers and staff regularly in front of the class. Yelling from both parties occurred far too often. My instructors and classmates would discuss "child discipline" techniques AKA discussed hitting their children in detail. As someone with PTSD from domestic abuse, this caused me flashbacks and panic attacks. I had asked my instructor to avoid these topics in the future, and she respected that for a time however did discuss it again with students later on which caused me the same reaction. This is the same instructor that wrote me up for "unprofessional behavior" when I had a panic attack. 7) The Director, Janet, was passive aggressive and condescending every time students voiced their concerns. Evening students are not given the same opportunities as day students and make up hours (especially for evening students) are not guaranteed. 8) Make sure you keep receipts of everything and take pictures of your completed work. Some my classmates experienced instances where they did not get credit for completed work. Upon stating that I would be unenrolling, staff attempted to refuse to give me the rest of my Esthetics Kit claiming that I did not pay for it. I told them that I had a receipt of purchase and would gladly show it to them, at which they caved and gave me the rest of my things.

Our cosmetology program is a state-mandated, 1600-hour program. Our esthetician program is a state-mandated, 600-hour program. On a full-time schedule, our students are projected to finish our cosmetology program in 11 months and our esthetician program in 4 months. On a part-time evening schedule, it’s a 19-month program for cosmetology and roughly 5-1/2 for esthetics.
No. You will have the advantage of learning from several different instructors during your time with JD Academy. This allows you the ability to receive different perspectives on the profession, learn from the different areas of expertise that our mentors bring with them, and also broadens your networking potential within the industry.
Our financial aid department will work with you one-on-one to help identify every possible financial aid benefit available to you. As mentioned above, that often includes Pell and other state & federal grants. Those with a military background would generally be eligible to use GI Bill or other VA benefits. There are both public and private scholarship opportunities. Once we’ve worked with you to exhaust all possible subsidies, we can work with you on both secured and unsecured student loans if necessary.
New student classes typically start every 5 weeks. In other words, you don’t need to wait for a Spring or Fall semester. We have new classes forming nearly every month.
Absolutely. JD Academy is accredited by The National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts + Sciences (NACCAS). In addition to a great education, this means our tuition is eligible for government programs such as Pell Grants and other financial assistance programs for those who qualify.
