I had a large quantity of hobby chemicals from my former husband in my garage. They are largely inert chemicals left over from someone who fancied himself as an inventor with a chemistry interest. I don't know much about the hobby chemicals other than they have been boxed up in the garage now for perhaps more than 30 to 35 years. The house is mine now and I am cleaning out the garage. Because it's a lot of boxes,, I visited the websites of the commercial chemicals removal companies only to find they do not handle anything at a residence or handle what is considered residential. Then I called the DEP in Tallahassee and a compliance officer called me back gave me the name of a chemicals removal company I might try (no luck) but he said since the chemicals are in a garage they are considered residential and household hazardous waste. He mentioned the different categories of hazardous waste they took and that I should take them to the DeLand Transfer Station or Tamoka Landfill. I know little about chemicals but common sense tells me the chemicals cannot be housed in my garage much longer. I wish to get them to a safe place to people who know what they are so they can be recycled and donated or disposed of in a manner that is safe for the environment. I spoke to a lady in charge at Tamoka and she said the same thing: In a garage it's regarded as household bring it to us via the DeLand Transfer Station or Tamoka direct. So this is my role in the process as I see it, To get the chemicals to them. For the most part and after a few inquiries the folks maning the collection site it has been a smooth and well organized process. Hopefully, this will continue. Moving forward and if you have any questions or concerns about what is going on in my home please feel free to use the direct approach. All the drama and sneaking around can easily be misunderstood. Thank you 😊
