This is a presumably a 2 star Michelin rated restaurant, I disagree. I don't presume to be a reviewer of any renown, but the first few courses (of 12 coursed) were so heavily vinegar obscured, that you could barely taste the food it was served with. Also, the wine pairings (which is a separate charge) were rendered tasteless because of the overuse of vinegar. While the food was unique (lace lichen in a broth, which was quite good) much flavor was lost. Other items of note: Maitake mushroom fried and infused; Lightly cured rockfish, makrut lime broth; Skate smoked over bay laurel, calhikari rice, pickles. The 'main' dishes were: Knight's Valley wagyu, koji toast, ume sabayon (wagyu tar-tar) and Lamb leg, farm thinnings, ground cherry, light jus. The lamb, which I love and have frequently, was tiny pieces and was rather tough. For our expenditure of about $530 per person (including tip) I was sorely disappointed and would not recommend anyone go unless you're very adventurist and a lot more wealthy that I am. The service was 5-star, the wait staff were very friendly and attentive (which I think is probably a large part of Michelin's rating, along with locally sourced, sustainably raised ingredients). The location is one of the most gorgeous on the west coast.

Overpriced for sure! At over $550 per night including tax, its kind of outrageous. Service from the front desk was cordial and caring. The views are amazing. BUT, the room was small and the bathroom plumbing definitely needed attention. Very cramped, poor shower head and you bump your head on the soap holder when you try and put your head under the shower. The restaurant was closed (obviously not enough patrons on a Wednesday night) so its a 15-20 minute drive to the nearest food stop. Breakfast served in your room in the morning was nice yet served in old chipped crockery. Need more attention to detail on that one. The plus's include a fire pit to sit around to enjoy the view, a comfy bed and a historic feel

I recently stayed at the Harbor House with my husband for a few nights. I can't say enough about this magical place. The scenery, which HH is not responsible for of course, is absolutely amazing. After you hit yourself a few times to recognize that this is not a dream, the rest of the wonderful things about the place come through. The service was excellent. We were treated like royalty and they were very attentive. The food is beyond outstanding. They have two Michelin stars and I wouldn't be surprised if they got another soon. The restaurant is obviously not inexpensive but just like French Laundry or Alinea, the expectation is high and the results are just as high. Another couple we met while there had already booked their next stay at HH before leaving. Since we live in Chicago that isn't exactly possible but we can't wait for our next visit!

Never before have I taken leftover carrots home in a box! We had such a delicious meal with deceptively generous servings that we could not finish everything but I could not bear to leave anything at all. So we brought home a little box of carrots & a little box of salad. This really was a perfect location for a celebration! It is stunning and intimate and friendly! We were greeted with a lovely glass of bubbles on arrival, which we drank on our beautiful deck overlooking the ocean. Shortly afterwards, we were gifted a fab welcome bowl of veggies and eggs from the garden. We were staying 2 nights and only booked dinner for one night. We should really have cooked the fresh provisions there and then, but it was my birthday, so we didn’t and we have just enjoyed them for a perfect lunch at home instead. The carrots were super sweet, but not quite as magically prepared as in their kitchen. We were a group of 3 couples with quite annoying and complicated dietary restrictions for which we were admirably catered. We had one room in the house, delightful (point to note the king mattress was interestingly much firmer than the others - take your pick); oceansong cottage, beautiful- I will choose this one if I am lucky enough to visit again, just the 2 of us; and the larger Madrone which was wonderful, fully equipped and fabulous as a gathering place for the 6 of us. We really could not have had a more delightful stay.

Questions & Answers

Best season to visit Mendocino, walk the beach and town and hopefully not deal with large crowds?

Early spring March, April and May is good, the weather is chilly but beautiful, the flowers are starting although you might still be caught in a storm (which have their own beauty.) Summer is tourist season although we don't have the crowds of some more popular places, we also have the coastal fog when 5 heats up inland. Fall the tourists leave but the fog can stay until storms start. The winter storms bring the storm chasers, between storms is some of our best weather, clear, clean, few tourists, beautiful. Some places close down for the winter or have shorter schedules or fewer days a week.

/What is the rate for tomorrow night (8/24/18)?
