Bird Island is wonderful but it is NOT accessible via Bay Street. I have encountered many lost walkers/drivers searching for it due to Google Maps' error. You need to go onto the beach via 40th St walkway then turn right and go along the beach until you see the big Bird Island sign. Not accessible with a vehicle.

Some very neat native plants on the nature trail. The ticks can be bad on the nature trail. I found one on me after walking the trail. The invasive Pampas grass is spreading like crazy on the island and will soon be the dominant plant if it’s not removed.

It is not officially but sporadically you will find some bathers pushing the limit there in more remote places. Overall the risk of finding someone doing this is low but not completely out of the question so just be on your guard.

No camping is allowed on Bird Island. If you're looking for coastal campsites, there are several state parks in North and South Carolina that are on the shoreline with camping options.
