Friendly staff! They really make you feel welcome. There are restrooms and soda machines at the terminals at Fort Fisher and Southport terminals. There is also a snack machine and drink machine on board the ferry. I was pleasantly surprised when they asked to see my ID before they swiped my card for payment because I ask for an ID check on the back of my card.

The ferry doesn't run, it floats.
Standard vehicles (under 20 feet ) are $7. Longer vehicle are more. Small vehicles, bicycles & pedestrians have lower fares.
Cars up to 20 ft are $7
Yes Southport to Fort Fisher not Bald Head the one you can take vehicles on But try the other one too BEAUTIFUL
You can't reserve ticket, you have to be there before the departure time and purchase your ticket there. During heavy traffic you want to be there at least 30min earlier or you will miss the ferry since they have limited spaces.

Yes. Downtown Southport is a few miles from the ferry terminal. I have seen people bike it, but walking would be a bit much. On the bright side, I've never had problems finding somewhere to park downtown and walking is easy after you do.
Go to NCDOT.GOV, then scroll down to Ferry services, scroll down to Ferry Terminals and select the location you want to visit. It will let you download the Ferry schedule. Starting at 7am til 4:45pm it departs every 45 minutes. The last Ferry leaving from Southport is at 6:15pm.

7 pm is the last departure but you should be parked in line no later that 6:40 to be certain you make it onto the boat.
