Nothing but fond memories of my time here. I wish I could do it all again, somehow. So much fun and such a challenge.

The DLI is the best place for learning a foreign language on earth or in the whole wide universe .... as far as NASA tells us.... when you are a part of DLI, you feel like a kid in a candy store..... for a ten minutes’ walk to the dining facility. ... which, by the way, is much better than so many restaurants around town ... oh yeah... the walk ... you will hear so many languages exchanged by instructors as well as their students ... a nice native to a non-native, learning-teaching, conversation in a beautiful combination of nature's landscape of ocean and mountain greenery environment. Great experience! I attended DLI first from Oct '68 to Apr '69 for Basic German then again Jan-Mar '76 for German Refresher before heading to 42d MP Group (Customs), Mannheim, Germany. Was further assigned to Field Ofc Schinnen (The Netherlands), Border Operations Det with Group to work on the Dutch/German & Belgian/German borders with border officials from 3 countries. Wonderful learning experience that prepared me to deal with those officials!

Questions & Answers

My son goes to Air Force Boot Camp at the end of this month, then on to the language school, they are trying to plan for a June wedding, will it be possible to get the time off from school to accomplish that? Even it is just for a weekend.

Rick Oregero | Sep 21, 2018
mike logan | Sep 21, 2018

Depends on actual start date of his class and how well he is doing.. If the wedding is within first 90 days of class. Ify at best. If it is more than 200 miles from base, he will probably need to take 2 days leave.sign out Fri night return Sun night. This will only happen if his grades are 90% or better and still iffy because he will need time of to find housing, arrange for HHG shipment etc. There is usually a lag between basic and DLI when new students are busy signing into everything from library to fitness to car registration. During this time married students arrange for household goods housing etc. Missing even one day of school is bad.. Pace is torrid. Goal is to become a 3/3/3 linguist which is basically native high school graduate in proficiency. Reading, listening, speaking and writing. He definitely should consider getting married ASAP after boot. He is already enlisted.. In his shoes... I'd consider getting married before boot.. Call DLI Air Force NCOIC to discuss.

My son is in tech school and we would like to visit him in March or April, do you happen to know when their spring break will be, or s holiday calendar for them? Thank you

Erin Searle | Sep 21, 2019
Ryan S. | Sep 21, 2019

Since many classes start at different times in the year there is not a set spring break. When your son starts class they will be able to pick one week out of the year as "spring break". But it might not be during spring. Unfortunately there also won't be any long weekends during March or April either.

I'm going to a graduation this week, is there a visitor dress code on base?

G. Wildey | Sep 21, 2019
Zach Wilson | Sep 21, 2019

There's no dress code per se, but if everyone else is in formal wear then go with business casual. Aloha formal works well during the summer.

I am a 1964 DLIWC Chinese Mandarin graduate and I still have my Chinese books from the class. Is this something the school would like to have? I am moving soon and looking to lighten the load. Advise please

If the school doesn’t want them, I might like them.

Call Defense Language Institute Presidio of Monterey main number and ask for student records office.

I see from an earlier post that the DLI breaks for Christmas on Dec. 23. Assuming that's correct, when will soldiers be expected to return? I'm trying to make travel arrangements for my soldier who will be there at that time. Thanks!

Normally it's January 3rd

I studied Russian at the US Army Language school from June 1958 to June 1959. Does the school still exist in the same location. If so, is it possible to visit there. I was in class R12 72.

john doody | Sep 21, 2018
mike logan | Sep 21, 2018

Yes, still there and going strong. Visits are difficult but you can call HQ Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center to check on current security level. Post CQ or Post Information Officer can make arrangements.

My husband is currently in basic training in Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and will be shipped to Monterey, CA for DLI after he graduates. Will he be able to bring his family (spouse) and will I be able to live on base? Or how does that work?

ananda Lowry | Aug 23, 2022
Lawrence Smith | Aug 23, 2022

It kinda depends. Since he’s married, yes you will be there. I kinda doubt you’ll want to live on base with him. Just be patient, it’ll be like a month probably before it’s all figured out once he’s out of Basic. This was my experience with the Navy.

Are you still looking for a Mandarin Chinese teacher. I'm from Taiwan and would love to work for you.

Best way is to visit usajobs.gov website and insert Chinese language instructor , and enter Monterey, ca in the location. I believe there is a need right now. Good luck

How long does a sailor have to be at DLI before they can leave the base

Nancy Sawyers | Feb 22, 2022
Shane Sato | Feb 22, 2022

I imagine that you mean after you get here. That depends on your "in training" command team. During the time you are at DLI your command team will tell you when you have off base privileges. If you mean how long the training here is, it depends on the language you get. If you get an Asian or Eastern European language the school is anywhere between 1.25 - 2 years.

i attended ru 9/65-5/66, graduated 5/66 and went onto usafss from there. is there a transcript of my russian class? if so, how do i get a transcript?

I'm a 1965 grad (Romanian). Any online Italian courses available?

Duke Wypyszinski | Sep 21, 2019
mike logan | Sep 21, 2019

Lots of them. Paid versions like Rosetta Stone. Low cost versions abound. Quality vs cost is best w an online college.. Talk w other Linguists on ling.net. Google "Facebook Italy" and ling.net.

Im in Aircrew Fundies right now and leave for DLI in less than two weeks. I was a boxer before I left and want to continue doing that, is there a facility that would allow me to continue that or would I have to go off base on the weekends?
