I believe emergency heat is implemented If your home utilizes a outside compressor that performs both cooling and heating functions and malfunctions while heating your home. Call your hvac service company, but in the interim call/repair time, set your thermostat to the emergency heat function and heat will be provided by the internal furnace equipment. This is just a interim backup solution while the compressor equipment is down for repair.
