This is a corrupt department with zero accountability. I only feel bad for the handful of good police in that department whose positive behavior and actions will be completely over shadowed by those of the despot officers - for it is those officers who set the tone for the entire department. I might have had hope for reform or that the tyrant officers would be better educated in their job responsibilities by the chief, but he endorses the ruthless injustices perpetrated by his officers. Zero stars would not recommend - I would 100% call a crack head for help before I would call this department.

My house was broken into while I was at work, when I come home and notice what happened I call 911 and get connected with New Paltz Police who show up promptly file their report and inform me I will be contacted by Detective Sutton at the very latest the following day. About 4 months later and this Detective has yet to show up or call me. Tax dollars hard at work.

Had a situation at Tops grocery store where there was an individual with a ten year old kid defying the executive order to wear a mask when you can not social distance. I complained to the store management. They told me they gave the persons a copy of the executive order and offered to give them a mask, and the individual cursed out the store employee. I asked the manager to call the police and they would not. At that point I decided to call the New Paltz police. The dispatcher told me I had to wait outside for the officer because I shouldn’t expect him to go in the store and walk up and down every aisle. It wasn’t like I was asking the police to find a hidden Easter egg in one of the aisles, but ok. When the officer arrived, he was really nice. But he definitely did not want to enforce the order. He told me he would go in and “recommend” the individual wear a mask. If the New Paltz police department won’t enforce a public safety order, then I suppose I would be free to have a party with 60 people on my own property, wearing no masks. The department should put something out publicly that says, “Yeah, it’s a public safety order meant to protect citizens and the continued shut down of their businesses, but ahhh, we will let that go so we can give people stop sign tickets and tickets for speeding six mph over the speed limit.” There should be a new executive order that allows citizens to defend themselves against those who blatantly want to pose a risk to their health and safety, especially since we can’t depend on our police department to do it. So if you go to New Paltz, you are considered dangerous for not stopping a full three seconds at a stop sign but you can walk around a store for two hours potentially spreading a virus to the store workers and customers. 👎🏻
