The Giant Talon series are great intro bikes that come with internal cable routing, disc brakes, internal routing for a dropper post. They're technically XC/intro mountain bikes but they're great bikes over all. Especially if you're going to hit some trails on the weekends. They're really a tough commuter/beginner trail bike. They start at 550 for the Talon 4 and go up to about 900 I believe. I'm sure there are others around the 750 range that would be great for the road. Having a total budget of 900 including tax and extras will get you a good proper bike and all you need to ride. Hope this helps!

As a formally 300 pound man most of the bikes for mountain biking that good find here are rated for about 300-350 lbs.

I've seen people park there and go for bike rides. Just don't park by the entrance.
