The views on the Fire Tower are amazing! The path up to the Fire Tower is one of the best kept and well maintained trails I've ever seen.

Best view of Johnson City! Stunning!!! Long slow drive up then a short hike, but worth it.

Trail is in great shape. Felt like stinging nettles around 3 miles. Greenery was brushing my lower legs then started itching shortly afterwards. Beautiful view at the top

Climb is pretty steady. It's about a 1500 foot elevation gain from the trailhead at the road. If you are not experienced hiker you will be sore the next day. (We were and we run 4 times a week). Seriously, if you are not used to walking 10 miles on flat ground, this can totally wipe you out. It took us an hour and 38 minutes to walk to the top. Took a little over an hour to walk back down. There are a few overlooks on the way up and down. We got caught in a rainstorm at the top. It was cold even in June. Unless its 80's predicted, take a jacket. Better take about two bottles of water for each person as well as something to snack on. Please carry out any trash. Beautiful overlook at the top!

Questions & Answers

Where is the closest place to access the Tower, to park for the wimpy hiker?

Go up the western side of the mountain on Briar Creek road, following the Forest service road to the upper parking lot visible on Google maps at the end of Fire Tower road. Go around the large rocks up the road, when the road meets an x-shaped intersection take the right fork around the gate and continue upward on that road all the way to the tower! You will need a moderate clearance vehicle like a small SUV to go up that road.

Are you allowed to camp at the tower/off the trail?

You can camp at at the tower .just not in or on the tower and not in the parking lot either. Please be respectful and responsible with your fire and remove all trash, take a shovel or something to dig a hole with when you use the bathroom cover it up paper and all. So no one will step in pooh.
