The area has some great nature. As Jason said, there is the Cross River Dam. If you get lucky you might see a couple of Ravens that are nesting in the area. Its a dirt road, but the locals drive fairly slow so that is nice. If you start at the "bottom" near Rt 35 and Rt22 and walk the full distance and back you will do about 4.3 miles.
Totally safe and a nice place but nothing to do here except walking for exercise. Very popular in that respect.you can fish here if you have the NYC permit and nys fishing licence
