You should judge the renewal date by when your passport expires. If you know the expiration date of your passport then you should be able to figure out when you need to get it renewed. Which is before your passport expires. Adult passports are valid for 10 years and you submit a renewal application in the mail.

The bad news is that you cannot renew a passport at a passport acceptance office, including the post office. ... Instead, use the expedited renewal-by-mail procedure that allows you to post the DS-82 application, photo, old passport and fee to the State Department. The new passport arrives by mail a month or so later.
Not sure on all the details of what you will need (which should be easy to find online), but there are specific hours when the Colonie Center post office processes passport applications. Call them or look online for details.
