If I could leave zero stars I would. They are incredibly disrespectful, slow, and rude. Every time I called to get an update on my 401k withdraw due to an emergency the individual who answered was extremely disrespectful. What should have only taken 3 weeks took almost 8 weeks. Absolutely terrible place. Be smarter than me . Put your money in a roth IRA, or literally anywhere else. Worst experience I've had hands down.

They will say "sir are you there? Sir?" after speaking with you just fine so that they can hang up on you anytime they don't want to help you; particularly if you are calling for help with rollover. There is no problem with the connection they just know that if they pretend the connection is bad and hang up when you call back your call will go to the next worker in line and they don't have to deal with it. Has happened to me 3 times. Everyone that works here is old and hates their job and I would too if I were them. A soulless occupation full of people who are dead inside who would love nothing more than to not help you

VERY disappointed with the customer service. I was told processing time would be 6-8 weeks. Over 8 weeks and I call to check on things. Wasn't even processed!! The lady told me it would now be sent for FURTHER processing. Where would things have been had I not called to check on things? Still sitting there????

Stephen Kong | Sep 14, 2018

Each retirement plan we administer has a wait time for refunded lump sum payments. These wait times are listed on the application that you sign to get a refund of your retirement account. If you are concerned about your wait time, please call our Member Services area at number listed above.

What day does your check get deposited if the 15th falls on a weekend

Leann Weich | Sep 14, 2019
Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems | Sep 13, 2021

If you are receiving payments from an NPERS State or County plan annuity, and your payment date falls on the weekend then your payment is processed the business day prior.

If I retire as a Nebraska educator and take a job as a teacher in another state, do I still need to sit out 180 days?

Nancy Welniak | Sep 14, 2018
Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems | Sep 13, 2021

The “180 day rule” applies to service at a Nebraska School or ESU that is participating the plan that we administer. Generally, if you were working at a school out of the state of Nebraska you would not have wait the statutory 180 days to receive funds from your retirement account.

I am confused about the withholding of federal or state income tax. Not sure which option to pick, Option A, B or C Can you help me?

Deb Hilder | Jun 15, 2022
Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems | Jun 15, 2022

We cannot advise you on which option to pick, as none of our staff are certified financial planners or tax preparers. However, you can go on the website npers.ne.gov and watch a video explaining the options (and how taxes are withheld) or if you would like to call into our Member Services they can walk you through how each option functions and how we withhold taxation on annuity payments or lump sum distributions (at 402-471-2053 or 800-245-5712) which may help you make a decision you are comfortable with.

My retirement date with LPS was May 22. LPS said I could start subbing full time on Nov. 19, which is 180 days but I thought I heard I couldn't start until Dec. 1? I just didn't want to start too early. Thank you for clarifying this for me.

With the rule of 85 I will retire in 5 years. How should I proceed with my health insurance, that would be needed after retire at age 59? At this time, North Platte Public Schools offer a BC/BS plan or teachers can decline ins.& take a stipend.

We do not provide, nor service, health insurance at NPERS. Please work with your employer regarding health insurance continuation options.

I am 67 but wanting to work another two years. I was told that if you die before you start taking teacher retirement, your beneficiaries will only receive your contribution not what the school district matched. Is this true?

Kathy Houser | Sep 13, 2020
Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems | Sep 13, 2020

Thank you for inquiring at NPERS. The school match helps to fund your retirement benefit. It is not part of your account balance. If you pass prior to retirement, your beneficiary may be able to draw a monthly benefit, or the lump sum of your account. If you have further questions or concerns please feel free to call Member Services at 1-800-245-5712, and we would be glad to help you.

Can you change your beneficiary at any time

Leann Weich | Sep 14, 2019
Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems | Sep 13, 2021

This question is too broad to be answered, as many things factor into when a beneficiary can and cannot be changed. Please, direct your specific questions to our Member Services Area at the telephone number listed above, or review your plan specific materials on our website.

What is Rule of 85?

Kathleen Kohel | Sep 14, 2019
Nebraska Public Employees Retirement Systems | Sep 13, 2021

For the NPERS School Retirement plan, legislation in 1998 allows a member who is at least 55 to retire with unreduced benefits when the member's age and years of service equal 85. For members hired (or rehired as a new member) on or after July 1, 2018, the minimum age for the "Rule of 85" is 60. To learn more visit our website linked above.

I am thinking of going part time. How many day a week do I need to work and still have it count as a full year toward retirement.
