Love it. If you want the best view, lots 20-30 are probably the best. But you can always walk away from your lot into the field for the bar 360 degrees view.

Look up cherry springs sky chart before you go for best visibility time and day. Also check the weather as it gets pretty chilly in the night even in late June. Weather can drop to 60 and feel like 50. Definitely warm up with pants and jacket and blankets. Best time to get here is right before sunset when you can still find a spot. Total darkness begins at 1030pm, 11pm. Take a telescope if you have a chance. Closest town is Coudersport. Would be a nice trip in combination with Niagara falls

Great stargazing experience. We can see milky way from naked eyes.

Stargazing here was amazing! We came close to a full moon (we'll plan better next time! Lol) but we still could see so many more stars!

Questions & Answers

Can someone tell me how the astronomer’s field works? Is it crowded? Are there campsites? I know no white lights or campfires are allowed. How many places are there and is it easy to get in on a Saturday even thought you can’t reserve online?

The astronomy observation telescopes have timings and reservations which you can do on the state park website, there is a free observation deck and parking and viewing field for short term visitors where as people staying the night have a separate entrance and deck which closes after 9 or 10 if I'm not mistaken. Do check the cherry springs website for clear sky details and reservations for cabins and astronomy.

I went there with no prior contact and simply registered at a suggestion box style slot at the actual location which is called the astronomy area. Did not even have to speak to anyone when I arrived. They lock the gate at dusk and reopen at dawn. Strictly no white light is to be shone of any kind for the entire morning til dawn. Cars are not moved around etc yes camping in tents or campers. there is water but only one spicket there is electric but low current only to be used to support astronomy equipment but not campers electric hooku[p
