Questions & Answers

Thank you for responding. Another question. How can I contact the the IRS directly and speak to a person regarding the tax closing letter? From the filing of the return and payment, it is going on now to almost 4 years. Can you offer an advise?

Betty You can try calling them at 800.829.1040. It might be very difficult to get through these days. According to an article in Fast Company, "As of last week, the IRS had answered only 2% of the 75 million phone calls it’s received.." You might be better off seeing if a transcript will work. Account transcripts, which reflect transactions including the acceptance of Form 706 and the completion of an examination, may be an acceptable substitute for the estate tax closing letter. Leo

I have been waiting for a tax closing letter for over 6 months on my father's estate. He has been deceased for 4 years and estate taxes have been paid last year Oct 2020. Can someone offer us some assistance on this topic? Thank you!

Betty Per the IRS: Estate tax closing letters will only be issued upon request by the taxpayer or taxpayer’s representative. Based on current restrictions due to the declared National Emergency the IRS will only accept a request for an estate tax closing letter by fax 855-386-5127 or 855-386-5128. The request requires a person authorized to receive information from the IRS to make the request. The following information must be provided with the request: Decedent’s name, SSN and Date of Death. Requester’s name, address, and substantiation the requester is an authorized individual such as an Executor, Trustee, or Power of Attorney. A copy of the will, if any. If the requester is an Executor, provide a copy of the Letters Testamentary issued by the Court, if issued. If the requester is a Trustee, provide a Certificate of Trust or similar official documentation. Please wait at least nine months after filing the return to make the closing letter request to allow time for processing
