I always stay in this place when I am in LA. It is a family business and owners are very nice people. Yes it is bit outdated but location is excellent , very good vibes and comfy apartments.

I've yet to visit this hotel, but because of Janice Joplin and specifically because of the owner's response to a bad review, I am going out of my way to stay there at least a weekend. Can't keep it anymore real than real.

I don't think they are renting rooms anymore. It has been converted to a homeless hotel.

Universal Studios is an approx. 15 min drive via the 101 fwy in decent traffic; come rush hour, it can be a 30-40 min or more drive. Alternatively, you can walk about 5 min down to the Hollywood / Highland Metro station and hop on the northbound B Line (formerly the Red Line) subway to the Universal City/Studio City station, which is the next stop. Signs will direct you to a pedestrian bridge leading to the tram pickup area, which carries guests up to the park entrance.
