It wasn't a hard mountain to walk. The path, however, did get somewhat sketchy above the summit as you maneuver around piles of boulders in the middle of I guess is a narrow path. It took 3 hours to go up the mountain and then possible 2 hours to go down. There is lots to see as there are ruins to see and Mount Sherman is attached to other mountains.

I've always wanted to go mountain hiking with son's and thought it'd be a great memorable experience. I googled easy 14fter's because at the time my son's were 13 and 11. Mt.Sherman was the top recommended easy 14fter... Absolutely nothing was easy about this climb, this climb almost rivaled my climb Mt. Elbert which was killer with all it's false summits. Physically taxing hike this was. Obviously I must of took us on the hard trail. I originally started out on one trail but we had an endless army of angry nats attacking us at the beginning of the trail. We duked it out with them for about 20 minutes then retreated because I thought we were on the wrong trail. The other trail I took us on crossed a small stream. Then took us up some really rocky terrain. My son's had to take numerous hydration breaks and I was quite winded at times myself. Whichever trail I took us on was very steep. My son's were little soldiers, especially my 11 year old but half way up the climb I told my son's that this was enough. We were on this hike for hours. My son's were disappointed and wanted me to continue up to the summit to make the hike worth it which I did. My son's returned to our car and I went on. I think it took me another 2 hours to reach the summit and I was power hiking it. The views from the top are marvelous and made the climb worth it. Never again tho lol.

Fun 14er, too bad we had to rush down due to a thunderstorm. Still made it to the top. The scree is a little tough at times and some paths are annoying to find but if you can take it slow it's worth the experience.

Arrived at 6:30AM and was able to park quite close to the trailhead. Summited at 8:15 and stayed at the summit until 8:45. Back to my car by 10:30 and there was still plenty of parking available. Crowds weren't bad for the ascent, but the summit was a zoo by the time I left and there was a conga line of people ascending as I was descending. This is definitely the easiest 14er I've done - plenty of dogs and kids of all sizes were on the trail. You start at 12000 ft so it's only 2000 ft of elevation gain. The first half of the trail is an old mining road and the rest of the trail is also fairly developed - not technical at all. There's not much scree or talus to deal with, and none of the trail is extraordinarily steep. But don't be fooled, the easiest 14er is still a demanding hike, especially if you are not acclimated to the altitude. There's a Y part way up the mining road, marked with a cairn. You want to go to the right even though the left seems to be the more "obvious" path. Several people ahead of me did not notice the turnoff and had to backtrack.

There's a couple snow fields you hike through, but nothing sketchy. Make sure your shoes have decent traction. The steepest sections to the summit are currently dry.

Get on 14ers.com to get more comprehensive and detailed information about conditions and trip times. Usually it takes me about 4hrs to do the round trip hike with little to no snow and better than average fitness. Tons of variables to consider.
