Great place for snow, but the roads can ice over quickly, so be prepared for icy, windy Winter conditions. It is best to have AWD or 4×4 with snow chains. At the very least bring snow chains or you have a good chance of being turned around once it snows by the forest service and/or HWY Patrol. There are a lot of great trails that you can hike up to the summit from the base of the mountain, and there is a dirt service road you can hike up to the summit of Mt Pinos from the Nordic Base. There are also a lot of spots where kids can sled and play in the snow, but parking can be tight on weekends when the crowds come. If you do come, please drive safe, watch out for kids and hikers, and please don't litter. Most of all, have a great time!

I’ve been here only once but I had a truly enjoyable experience. The drive up and down the mountain road was beautiful. It was winter and the road was hazardous. But with 4WD it was easily managed. At the top the parking area was well maintained. The Ski Patrol personal at the Nordic Center were friendly and helpful. The “snow play” area looked fun. I have two minor issues. 1. Seating is severely limited. In particularly for those how are disabled. More solid bench like seating. 2. Toilets. I see no reason why modern clean toilets with paper, soap and water are not more plentiful. Porta-potties are so last century. If we are going to land people on Mars, why can’t we build better toilets in are forest and desert parks. I would recommend this area for its winter time activities. Specifically snow showing and cross country skiing.

Hey does anyone know if they close the gates to the parking lot at night time, and if so around what time at the base?

Nope. It's always open as long as it's not a snow hazard. But you'll find us astrophotographers a bit unhappy with your car lights. Hahahaha
