Excellent presentation of Ava's background and career. Very nice set of artifacts including wardrobe from various movie roles.

This museum is a hidden gem. I was in Smithfield because it was the midpoint town for a friend and I to meet up. I noticed the museum was near our lunch spot so we decided to give it a look. We were greeted by docent Beth Cannon who gave us a lovely warm welcome. She led us into small auditorium style room for the introductory film. The room’s walls were lined with many paintings of Ava, along with informational wall text, and Beth treated us to a small talk before starting the film. The movie was about 20 minutes long and was incredibly comprehensive in giving a great overview of Ava’s life. After that we walked through the museum to see a collection of costumes, accessories, and other items belonging to Ava or associated with her films. More extraordinary than all this was the wall text, which did a great job of detailing many small anecdotes about Ava. It’s clear both the museum caretakers and the town are proud to call Ava their own, and they take the job of telling her story seriously. My friend and I really enjoyed our visit here, and I felt inspired to watch many of the films discussed in the museum. Definitely worth visiting if you are in Smithfield or passing through.

Hi. A friend and I plan lunching in Smithfield tomorrow (Sun, 2/18), and then visiting the museum. Could you please confirm you'll be open at 2, and suggest where you like to eat - anything from "fun and funky" to fancy works, as long as it's good.

To confirm times, call the number on the Google listing, but hurry. They close in about an hour from this writing. I have no reason to suspect their Sunday hours have changed. Location operators do not necessarily see questions posted to Maps. Mostly just users like me (guides) see them. There is a good restaurant across the street* called "Simple Twist" that I would recommend. 11-3 on Sun. *227 E Market St.

Did Frank Sinatra pay for her body to be returned to the U.S. and the funeral expenses there?

tony della | Sep 11, 2018
Lynell Seabold | Sep 11, 2018

No, Frank did not pay for any of the expenses related to Ava's return to Smithfield or her burial. Contrary to rumors, he also did not pay her medical expenses after her stroke or before her death. They remained very close friends, however, and he was in touch with her on a regular basis during the last years of her life.
